Teaching Rounds A Visual Aid to Teaching Internal Medicine Pearls on the Wards

Teaching Rounds: A Visual Aid to Teaching Internal Medicine Pearls on the Wards By Navin Kumar, Anica Law
2016 | 212 Pages | ISBN: 0071821627 | PDF | 19 MB

A unique tool for teaching and learning the top 100 most teachable topics in internal medicine There are many challenges for residents when training students who are making the big "jump" from preclinical to clinical. Most notably, they need to find time to pick and prepare topics to teach in meaningful ways without the availability of a blackboard in the learning hospital. Students also need to quickly be able to grasp these concepts quickly and with the ability to recall them later. This teaching manual primarily focuses on physiology/pathophysiology/exam findings with the goal of providing content to make teaching and learning on the wards easier for both attendings/senior residents and interns/medical students. It features the 100 most teachable topics (clinical pearls) in an image-based presentation and will cover all the major disciplines of internal medicine, including cardiology, gastroenterology, endocrine, and infectious disease. Each topic, or card, has an image on one side to prompt discussion (ECG, CXR, physical exam finding, etc.), and the flip side includes teaching points organized in question and answer format. They are presented in a pocket-sized binder with removable cards so both residents and students can remove only the topics of the day or ones they need to study. Each topic area has been reviewed by a specialist at Harvard Medical School. Visual, easy-to-use and reference tool for on-the-go Discusses the "why" behind a teachable topic Q&A format serves both rotation and exam prep Case-based to practice clinical pearls and complex topics

Description:
The harrowing adventure-at-sea memoir recounting the 2013 search-and-rescue mission for lost Montauk fisherman John Aldridge - first a New York Times Magazine feature story, now in priority development as a major motion picture from The Weinstein Company.

"A Speck in the Sea is a terrific read-harrowing and inspiring at the same time. In the end it's a moving testament both to our individual will to survive and to our collective will to come to the aid of others in distress. I couldn't put it down." -Daniel James Brown, author of The Boys in the Boat

In the dead of night on July 24, 2013, John Aldridge was thrown off the back of the Anna Mary while his fishing partner, Anthony Sosinski, slept below. As desperate hours ticked by, Sosinski, the families, the local fishing community, and the U.S. Coast Guard in three states mobilized in an unprecedented search effort that culminated in a rare and exhilarating success.

The Roots of Hinduism The Early Aryans and the Indus Civilization

The Roots of Hinduism The Early Aryans and the Indus Civilization

Asko Parpola, "The Roots of Hinduism: The Early Aryans and the Indus Civilization"
2015 | pages: 384 | ISBN: 0190226927 | EPUB | 8,9 mb

Hinduism has two major roots. The more familiar is the religion brought to South Asia in the second millennium BCE by speakers of Aryan or Indo-Iranian languages, a branch of the Indo-European language family. Another, more enigmatic, root is the Indus civilization of the third millennium BCE, which left behind exquisitely carved seals and thousands of short inscriptions in a long-forgotten pictographic script. Discovered in the valley of the Indus River in the early 1920s, the Indus civilization had a population estimated at one million people, in more than 1000 settlements, several of which were cities of some 50,000 inhabitants. With an area of nearly a million square kilometers, the Indus civilization was more extensive than the contemporaneous urban cultures of Mesopotamia and Egypt. Yet, after almost a century of excavation and research the Indus civilization remains little understood. How might we decipher the Indus inscriptions? What language did the Indus people speak? What deities did they worship?
Asko Parpola has spent fifty years researching the roots of Hinduism to answer these fundamental questions, which have been debated with increasing animosity since the rise of Hindu nationalist politics in the 1980s. In this pioneering book, he traces the archaeological route of the Indo-Iranian languages from the Aryan homeland north of the Black Sea to Central, West, and South Asia. His new ideas on the formation of the Vedic literature and rites and the great Hindu epics hinge on the profound impact that the invention of the horse-drawn chariot had on Indo-Aryan religion. Parpola's comprehensive assessment of the Indus language and religion is based on all available textual, linguistic and archaeological evidence, including West Asian sources and the Indus script. The results affirm cultural and religious continuity to the present day and, among many other things, shed new light on the prehistory of the key Hindu goddess Durga and her Tantric cult.

Rome and Jerusalem The Clash of Ancient Civilizations

Rome and Jerusalem The Clash of Ancient Civilizations

Martin Goodman, "Rome and Jerusalem: The Clash of Ancient Civilizations"
2008 | pages: 640 | ISBN: 0375726136 | EPUB | 5,9 mb

A magisterial history of the titanic struggle between the Roman and Jewish worlds that led to the destruction of Jerusalem.
Martin Goodman-equally renowned in Jewish and in Roman studies-examines this conflict, its causes, and its consequences with unprecedented authority and thoroughness. He delineates the incompatibility between the cultural, political, and religious beliefs and practices of the two peoples and explains how Rome's interests were served by a policy of brutality against the Jews. At the same time, Christians began to distance themselves from their origins, becoming increasingly hostile toward Jews as Christian influence spread within the empire. This is the authoritative work of how these two great civilizations collided and how the reverberations are felt to this day.

The Making of Middlebrow Culture

The Making of Middlebrow Culture

Joan Shelley Rubin, "The Making of Middlebrow Culture"
ISBN: 0807820105, 0807843547 | 1992 | EPUB | 438 pages | 2 MB

The proliferation of book clubs, reading groups, "outline" volumes, and new forms of book reviewing in the first half of the twentieth century influenced the tastes and pastimes of millions of Americans. Joan Rubin here provides the first comprehensive analysis of this phenomenon, the rise of American middlebrow culture, and the values encompassed by it.
Rubin centers her discussion on five important expressions of the middlebrow: the founding of the Book-of-the-Month Club; the beginnings of "great books" programs; the creation of the New York Herald Tribune's book-review section; the popularity of such works as Will Durant's The Story of Philosophy; and the emergence of literary radio programs. She also investigates the lives and expectations of the individuals who shaped these middlebrow institutions-such figures as Stuart Pratt Sherman, Irita Van Doren, Henry Seidel Canby, Dorothy Canfield Fisher, John Erskine, William Lyon Phelps, Alexander Woollcott, and Clifton Fadiman.
Moreover, as she pursues the significance of these cultural intermediaries who connected elites and the masses by interpreting ideas to the public, Rubin forces a reconsideration of the boundary between high culture and popular sensibility.

Cardiovascular Catheterization and Intervention A Textbook of Coronary, Peripheral, and Structura

Cardiovascular Catheterization and Intervention A Textbook of Coronary, Peripheral, and Structura

Cardiovascular Catheterization and Intervention: A Textbook of Coronary, Peripheral, and Structural Heart Disease by Debabrata Mukherjee, Eric Bates, Marco Roffi and David Moliterno
English | 2010 | ISBN: 1841846643 | 724 pages | PDF | 22 MB

The field of invasive and interventional cardiology is dynamic with frequent advances in both technique and technology. An internationally-renowned team of editors and over 100 contributors have shaped this textbook to provide clinicians with a thorough guide that covers the procedural and peri-procedural aspects of coronary, peripheral, and structural heart disease diagnostics and interventions.
This comprehensive and highly illustrated textbook presents critical information for anyone active in the field of cardiovascular interventions, including:
* Practical suggestions on how to set up a cardiovascular catheterization laboratory, choose the right equipment and minimize radiation exposure.
* A careful analysis of the general principles of percutaneous coronary interventions, the specific knowledge needed in different clinical scenarios, as well as the patient selection criteria for each invasive procedure.
* In-depth coverage of non-coronary interventions, including 13 chapters on peripheral vascular interventions, including carotid artery stenting, as well as newer procedures for intracranial stenosis treatment, septal defect repair, and left atrial appendage closure.
* An incorporation of emerging procedures in structural heart disease, such as percutaneous aortic valve replacement and mitral valve repair-that although not presently mainstream, will likely become an important domain of interventional cardiologists.
Given the importance of appropriate training and credentialing for clinicians, the textbook also includes current national guidelines and policies on the performance of the various procedures.
